Abstract

617,150. Wall &c. plugs. COLTON, L. H. Sept. 8, 1944. No. 17226. Addition to 565,003. [Class 89 (i)] Expansible plugs, according to the parent Specification, for use in wood, brickwork, cement, concrete, plastic substances, and tarmac, &c., have the bore extending from one end only as far as a conical surface. Longitudinal slits extend from the other end at least as far as the conical surface to divide this end into a number of fingers. A hexagonal, &c. plug 1, Fig. 1, has a tapped bore terminating in a conical end 3 and the slits 4 extend as far as the conical end of the bore. The slit end may be solid apart from the slits or may have a bore of less diameter than that of the main body of the plug according to the degree of expansion required. To facilitate expansion an external groove may be turned at the end of the slit portion. The plug is expanded by a conical ended pin 6 that may be hammered into place or may be forced home by a screw 7 with which it may be integral. In some cases the hole in the cement &c.may be lined with a wooden bush that may be split. The expansion may be effected by a screwed tool 8, Fig. 4, having a conical end 8a followed by a fluted part 8c that cuts a thread in the expanded end. After expansion the plug 8 is removed and an ordinary bolt may then be screwed right up to the expanded end of the plug.
