Abstract

The screw (1) is provided for the fixed connection of structural elements with a defined intermediate distance, without special spacer elements being necessary. The screw has a thicker threaded part (4) on the tool side and a thinner part (6) provided with a thread. The two parts (4, 6) are connected by a conical transition part (5) provided with a thread, and all these parts (4, 5, 6) are provided with a wood screw thread of the same lead. The transition part (5) is designed with two opposite grooves (10) for chips, the cutting edges of which grooves cut chips from the outer structural element. The material-displacing action of the thicker threaded part (4) is thus reduced, with the result that a clean bore edge is achieved without swelling of the material. <IMAGE>

Description

(54) SCREW (71) I, ALPHONS ROGGER, a Swiss citizen, of Subergstrasse 196X, 3257 Grossaffoltern, Switzerland, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention concerns a screw with two threaded sections of different diameters.
A screw is known, the center section of which has a smooth shank which is followed by a thread, cut towards the point of the screw, the diameter of which does not extend beyond that of the smooth shank. A thread reaching to the screw head is rolled on the screw shank and its diameter is greater than that of the shank of the screw.
Both thread sections have the same pitch.
Furthermore, a screw of a similar kind is known on which the thread sections are of different diameter. These thread sections have either the same or a different pitch.
Also known is a double screw for fixing pre-drilled wood panels to a wall equipped with plugs or dowels, whereby a definite space is intended between the panel and the wall without the use of special distancing elements. A casing with inner and outer threading is screwed onto the thread of the thicker section next to the screw head. This casing makes the screw fastening much more expensive. Moreover, the screw has a relatively large flat screw head.
The screw according to the invention is intended to eliminate these disadvantages.
According to the invention we provide a screw with at one end a socket for receiving a tool, having (a) at the tool receiving end, a first threaded section, (b) at the other end, an at least partially threaded section which is longer and of smaller diameter than said first section, and (c) a threaded frustoconical transition section between said first and second sections, all sections having the same thread pitch, and the transition section having a cone angle of between 30 and 900 and having formed therein at least two scrap material recesses each of which has a cutting edge so that, by the cutting away of scrap material of a workpiece therewith, material displacement caused by the thicker threaded section is reduced or eliminated.
One embodiment of the screw of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein: Figure 1 is a side view of the screw, and Figure 2 shows the screw used to fix a panel to a plug in a wall.
The screw 1 shown serves especially to fix panels 2 without depending on special distancing elements. The panels 2 can be e.g. of wood, wood shavings, plastics or asbestos cement. The screw 1 (Fig. 1) has, at an end adapted to receive a tool, a threaded section 4, a frusto-conical threaded transition section 5, as well as an at least partially threaded section 6 which is longer and thinner than the section 4. The latter is threaded, in the example according to Fig. 1, along its entire length. All threaded sections 4, 5 and 6 bear a wood screw thread of the same pitch; this prevents, when the thicker section 4 of the screw is screwed in, the destruction of the existing thread in the panel 2 and/or that of the thinner threaded section 6 in the plug 7 (see Fig. 2).
The frusto-conical threaded transition section 5 has a cone angle between 300 and 90".
A socket 8 in the thicker end of the screw can have the shape of a recessed hexagon or triangle, a cross slot, straight slot or a rosette the profile of which is defined by four arc sections which serve to receive a spanner or screw-driver.
It is of advantage for the thinner section 6 to be formed with a short unthreaded cone 9 on its free end and for there to be a non-threaded part 6a adjacent the frustoconical transition section 5 (see Fig. 2).
The conical transition section is equipped with at least two scrap material recesses 10 which reach partially into the thicker threaded section 4. The scrap material grooves 10 each have a lateral cutting edge, which cause the cutting away of scrap material in the panel 2 which reduces material displacement by the thicker threaded section 4 and achieves a smooth drill hole edge without distending the material.
According to Fig. 2, the screw 1 serves to fix a wood panel 2 at a definite distance from a wall 3 equipped with wall plugs 7 without requiring a special distancing element. (Similarly, a wood panel 2 can also be fixed, by means of the screw, to a wood base.) The difference in diameter of screw sections 4 and 6 can be chosen to be much smaller than in the fixing of the panel 2 to the plugged wall 3 as shown in Fig. 2.
It is an advantage of the thicker threaded section 4 that it can be sunk completely into the panel 2 and be covered, which is not possible with a flat-head screw.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A screw with at one end a socket for receiving a tool, having (a) at the tool receiving end, a first threaded section, (b) at the other end, an at least partially threaded section which is longer and of smaller diameter than said first section, and (c) a threaded frusto-conical transition section between said first and second sections, all sections having the same thread pitch, and the transition section having a cone angle of between 300 and 90C and having formed therein at least two scrap material recesses each of which has a cutting edge so that, by the cutting away of scrap material of a workpiece therewith, material displacement caused by the first threaded section is reduced or eliminated.
2. A screw according to Claim 1, wherein said socket consists of a recessed hexagon, a cross slot, a straight slot or a rosette for receiving a spanner or a screw driver.
3. A screw substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
**WARNING** end of DESC field may overlap start of CLMS **.

Claims (3)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. drill hole edge without distending the material.
