Abstract

538,709. Bolt anchors. RAWLINGS, J. J., and RAWLPLUG CO., Ltd. May 22, 1940, No. 9069. [Class 89 (i)] In a bolt anchor of the kind in which a member is movable longitudinally in a split or segmental tube to effect expansion thereof to clamp it in a hole in brickwork, masonry &c. the segmental parts of the tube have inward projections engaging outward projections from the lateral surfaces of the movable member to prevent the member from moving in an outward direction from within the tube. The movable member 1 is of conical form with four pyramidal flats 6 merging at one end into an unbroken circumferential surface 7 and at the other end into outstanding lips 8 extending therefrom and engaging internal hook-like lips 9 on the segmental tube 2. The smaller part of the nut is provided with four faces also inclined to the axis of the nut. The member 1 may be in the form of a nut engaged by a bolt 4 or may be fomred as the head of a bolt moved axially by a nut. The other end of the segmental tube is provided with a ferrule or cap 3 or a cord or wire or spring ring fitting a circumferential groove 10 or 12 on the segments. The abutting edges of the segments may be formed with interengaging teeth 13 or serrations to prevent longitudinal movement of the segments relatively to each other. The cap may be of such a size that a part 21 thereof extends beyond the segmental parts thus leaving the wall unsupported. This part may be formed with radial grooves and is collapsed under the pressure applied in the direction of the axis of the bolt. Rudimentary or partial screw threads or other ribs 14 may be formed on parts of the external surfaces of the parts 2 to assist in securing the bolt anchor firmly in the hole in the wall.
