569,962. Variable-pitch propellers. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., SPOUGE, E. H., and WARDE, R. H. Dec. 13, 1943, No. 20892. [Class 114] In a variable-pitch propeller comprising a wooden blade 28 with a metal shank comprising a socket 12 and a spigot 24 with screw threads 18, 26 of opposite hand, both the socket and the spigot extend inwardly beyond the end of the blade to form a root portion 14, 22 the external diameter of which is smaller than that of the socket. The ball or roller thrust bearing 60 is carried by a separate annular seat 30 screwed on to the end of the socket portion 14 and secured thereto by locking pins. The socket portion 14 is splined to a driving sleeve 42 which has a flange to engage a flange 32 on the seat 30. The sleeve 42 is splined to a pitchchanging ring 56 and is held in position by means of a nut 48 screwed into the end of the spigot portion 22 and secured thereto by locking pins 52. The spigot portion 22 may be tubular to serve as a bearing sleeve for an arm of a spider secured to the propeller shaft.
