Abstract

547,742. Screw propellers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. March 7, 1941, No. 3125. Convention date, March 9, 1940. [Class 114] A variable-pitch propeller blade is mounted rotatably in a hub-socket by means of rollers or balls which engage annularracesformed directly in the bladeshank and the socket, separate races being dispensed with. The hub 10 shown in the Figure is formed with sockets 12, 14, 16 each carrying a blade 20 on rows 22 .. 30 of balls which engage races 32, 34 in the blade and socket. The races are hardened by heat-treatment. The balls are introduced through holes 38 .. 46 formed in bosses 36 on the sockets. After the balls have been introduced and pre-loaded, plugs 52 are inserted in the holes, the plugs are secured by screw-threads, or by a wire 53. A packing- ring 60 is inserted in a groove 58 in each socket. Each blade-shank may be formed with integral teeth 64 for engaging pitch-changing gear, and may be closed by a cap 66 carrying a balance-weight 72. The shank may be integral with or attached to the blade.
