Each pair of turbines is on a common axis. Turbines c, d, e, e drive pinions in gear cases a, b, there being a coupling i between the high-pressure and intermediate - pressure turbines c, d and another coupling i between. the two low-pressure turbines c, e. These couplings are of the kind that allow a slight angular motion of one part relative to the other. The large wheel in the case a is on a hollow shaft encircling the driven shaft, and can be disengaged therefrom by the coupling j. The lowpressure turbine casings enclose reversing-turbines and are adapted to receive high-pressure steam. The arrangement of the high, intermediate, and low-pressure elements may be slightly modified. Specification 18,977/13 is referred to.
