845,129. Turbine plant. FAIRFIELD SHIPBUILDING & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 30, 1958 [Nov. 8, 1957], No. 34856/57. Class 110 (3). A marine steam turbine plant having turbines working at different steam pressures which transmit power through double-reduction gearing including a large slow-speed propeller driving gear-wheel comprises a high-pressure turbine 14 which exhausts through a reheater 12 to a low-pressure turbine 16 which develops considerably more power than the highpressure turbine, two high-speed pinions 30, 31 driven by the two turbines respectively, one of which meshes with a medium speed gear-wheel 34 and the other with two medium speed gearwheels 35, 36 on opposite sides of it and three secondary pinions 37, 38, 39 connected to the medium speed gear-wheels 34, 35, 36 respectively and which all mesh with the large slow-speed gear-wheel 40. The high-pressure turbine 14 rotates at a higher speed than the low-pressure turbine and the speed reduction may take place in primary and secondary gears of the high-pressure turbine or in the primary gears only. The reduction gear ratios may be so designed that the torques transmitted by the secondary pinions 37, 38, 39 to the large gear-wheel 40 are approximately equal. The reheater 12 is heated by the combustion gases from the boiler 11 but may be arranged separately from the boiler structure or partitioned from the flue gas system and derive its heat from high temperature-steam bled from the superheater 11a. Astern turbines 15, 17 and control valves 20, 24, 25 may also be provided.
