Abstract
158,311. Beardmore, Sir W., Chorlton, A. E. L., and Doig, J. S. Oct. 24, 1919. Driving -arrangements for screw propellers.-Power plant for ships comprises an internalcombustion engine set the crank shaft of which is divided, one end being coupled direct to the propeller shaft, and the parts of the crank-shaft having clutches so that the whole of the power can be used for propulsion or a part used for driving auxiliary machines such as dynamos, winches, &c. The plant comprises two sets of cylinder blocks A, B with corresponding parts C, F of the crank-shaft, which has an intermediate clutch E, is directly coupled to the propelier shaft D, and also has an end clutch G. The engines may be of the Diesel or semi-Diesel types. Preferably, a feathering propeller J is used, control gearing K being provided. A dynamo H or other auxiliary can be driven through the clutch G.
