Abstract

461,996. Opposed-piston engines. BARRETT, F. F., and BURGESS, F. W. C. Aug. 29, 1935, No. 24140. [Class 7 (ii)] Driving-gear ; cylinders; bed-plates ; crankchambers.-Opposed pistons work in axially-' aligned cylinders 3 which are parallel to and equidistant from the central shaft, and are secured to opposite sides of a central supporting plate 2. Openings in the plate constitute the combustion chambers for the pairs of cylinders. Crank-cases 7, 8 secured to the cylinders are supported on the plate 2 by struts 25. Lugs 28 permit the use of mounting trunnions. Bevel wheels 9 in each crank-shaft drive bevels 10, 11 on concentric propeller shafts 12, 13, the engine being double-ended in this respect. The crankshafts may be fitted with two bevel-wheels of differing sizes for driving the shafts 12, 13 at differing speeds. Inlet and exhaust valves 21 are actuated from the crank-shaft by cams 20 and toothed gearing 17, 18. Magnetos or fuel pumps 30 and lubricating-oil pumps are driven by bevel gearing 32, 33 at opposite ends of the engine.
