Abstract

684,101. Balancing engines. DAVEY, PAXMAN & CO., Ltd. Jan. 19. 1951 [Feb 3, 1950], No, 2879/50. Class 122(iii) In an internalcombustion engine having two mutually - inclined banks of cylinders with an even number of cylinders in each bank the out of balance rocking couple is counter - balanced by balance weights at both ends of the engine mounted on shafts driven from the crankshaft. At the drive end of a diesel engine having two inclined banks a, b of four cylinders each, balance weights h are provided on two intermediate gear wheels e, f which are driven at crankshaft speed from a gear wheel c on the crankshaft d and form part of the gear train between the crankshaft and the camshafts g. Alternatively, a weight or weights may be carried by a single gear wheel driven from a gear wheel on the crankshaft and meshing with two other gear wheels forming part of the camshaft gear train. At the free end of the engine a single wheel carrying a balance weight is disposed vertically above and driven at crankshaft speed by a gear wheel on the crankshaft. Specification 662,143 is referred to.
