Abstract
223,350. Rowell, H. S. Aug. 11, 1923. Engines with two or More parallel cylinders with axes perpendicular to main shaft.-In a reciprocating engine, in addition to the primary and secondary forces, forces of higher orders are balanced by reciprocating masses having a motion other than simple harmonic and driven at a multiple of the engine speed. In the case of a four-cylinder engine, a balancing mass may be driven by a connecting-rod from a crank driven at twice the engine speed by chain or spur gearing, the ratio of the length of the connecting-rod to its crank being such as to give the required modification of simple harmonic motion. The balancing-mechanism may be arranged in the crank case, or a balancing-mass may be driven from each end of the crank shaft, or two balancing-masses D<6>, D<7>, Fig. 5, or unequal weight may be driven from cranks A outside the crank case. The auxiliary connecting-rod may be dispensed with, the auxiliary crank A, Fig. 4, engaging a suitably curved slot D<4> in the balance weight D, or in a cross head connected, to the balance weight. The balance weight may be formed with a reduced portion D<5> to permit adjustment of the weight. In the case of an eight cylinder engine, the balancing masses are driven at four times the engine speed.
