Abstract
635,167. Balancing engines. SARTORIS, G. U. L., and A.B.C. MOTORS, Ltd. Oct. 22, 1947, No. 28207. [Class 122(iii)] In an engine having pistons reciprocating in cylinders 16 arranged in pairs on opposite sides of a crankshaft 10 provided with two opposite throws, each of the two crankpins being engaged by the connecting rods 13 of two pistons which reciprocate in co-axial cylinders, the moving parts of the engine are balanced partly by counterweights 18 on the two outer crank webs 19, designed to balance the rotating masses completely and also provide a couple to neutralize half of the disturbing couple due to the reciprocating masses by reason of the inter-cylinder distance measured along the axis of the shaft, and the balance of the primary couples is completed by one or more countershafts 20, 21 extending parallel to the crankshaft 10, rotating at the same speed as the latter but in the opposite direction, and being fitted towards their ends with balance weights 31, 32, 33, 34, to neutralize the remaining half of the disturbing couple; the balance weights 18 and 31...34 on the crankshaft and countershafts respectively are set at such relative angles as to have an increasing additive balancing effect as the cranks approach the common plane of the crankshaft and cylinders but act in neutralizing opposition when the cranks are at right angles to that plane. The countershafts may be arranged intermediately between the crankshaft and camshafts 29, 30, with gear wheels connecting the various shafts, and one of each of the balance weights 33, 34 on the countershafts may be combined with gearwheels 22, 23 attached thereto.
