Abstract

1,193,993. Gearing obtaining combined rotary and axially reciprocating motion. W. J. LEWINGTON and N. BROWNE. 23 July, 1968 [26 July, 1967], No. 34337/67. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division F1] A piston of an I.C. engine, pump or compressor is connected by a pair of connecting rods 15, 16 to coaxial crank-shafts 7, 8, rotating in opposite directions. In the two-stroke crankcase compression engine shown, bevel gears 17, 18 on the shafts 7, 8 mesh with a fixed ring gear 19, whereby the piston 3 and crankcase 4 rotate about the cylinder axis. The output shaft 5 form an extension of the crankcase 4 and carries a driving sprocket 27 and flywheel 20. Balance weights 25 are provided in the crank discs and if necessary on the crankcase. In a modification the crankcase 4 is stationary and the output shaft 5 is fast with the ring gear 19. In Fig. 3 (not shown) two cylinder units as shown in Fig. 1 are joined together at their output shafts, the arms of the crank-shafts of one cylinder being at right angles to that of the other.
