Abstract
1432408 Coupling of crank-shafts J E DUTRY and A H FEYENS 17 July 1973 [18 July 1972] 34098/73 Heading F1B An I.C. piston engine comprises at least one pair of cylinders 1, 5 with a common combustion chamber 9, the swept volume of one cylinder 5 being less than that of the other 1 of the or each pair, pistons 2, 6 reciprocably movable in the cylinders to drive respective crank-shafts 4, 8, the crank-shafts being operatively linked so that crank shaft 8 rotates at more than twice the rotational speed of crank-shaft 4. The ratio of crank-shaft speeds is preferably 3:1. The swept volume of cylinder 1 is from three to five (preferably four) times that of cylinder 5. Crank-shaft 4 leads crank-shaft 8 by from 15 degrees to 45 degrees, preferably 30 degrees, when crank-shaft 8 is at its TDC position.
