Abstract

The engine has a piston (3) reciprocating in a cylinder (1). A gudgeon pin (7) at the bottom of the piston carries two connecting rods (8, 9) which are inclined at equal and opposite angles to the centreline of the cylinder. Each connection rod is pinned at its other end to one of a pair of crankshafts (5, 6). The two crankshafts rotate in opposite directions and their outputs are combined by a pair of meshing gears at one end of them. The use of two connecting rods rotating in opposite directions eliminates unbalanced lateral forces on the cylinder and thus reduces friction and wear.
