1391268 Making crankshafts DOXFORD & SUNDERLAND Ltd and F ORBECK 8 Aug 1972 [12 Aug 1971] 37961/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A crank for the crankshaft of a piston engine comprises two crank arms 11 interconnected at one end by a crankpin 10 formed integrally with the one end of each arm, the other end of each arm being connected to the one end by a transverse welded joint and adapted for connection to a separately constructed side pin (21), Fig. 3 (not shown), or to a journal. Sections 12, 13 of the crank arm 11 are deep slag welded together and the joint (23), Fig. 3, may be oblique to the center line of the crankshaft or alternatively be non-planar. The cranks may be used in a single piston engine in which the main journals are connected directly to the ends of the arms and the crank may have only one arm.
