[Also in Division F1] In a four-cylinder I.C. engine (see Division F1 the connecting rods 11 of each pair of pistons 12 are connected by pins to a slide block 9 which is guided (by means not shown) to move parallel to the axes of the cylinders 13, the reciprocating motion of the slide being converted into rotary motion of a pair of shafts 1 by means of frusto-conical rollers carried by the slide and engaging cam grooves 3 formed in cylindrical members 2 integral with the shafts 1. Gears 5 ensure that the shafts 1 rotate in synchronism. The drive may be taken from one shaft 1 only. The shape of the cam grooves 3 may be such as to provide different movements for each stroke of the engine cycle.
