Abstract

674,225. Balancing reciprocating engines. HAMILL, W. W., CRUMP, R. S., and MEADOWS, Ltd., H. Sept. 30, 1949, No. 24486/48. Class 122(iii) In a reciprocating engine or compressor in which secondary forces are balanced by two balancing members rotating in opposite directions at twice the crankshaft speed, the balancing members comprise a pair of shafts each having several axially spaced portions, one for each piston. The shafts are disposed below the crankshaft in a detachable housing below which the sump is secured and each comprise journal portions 8 separated by balancing portions 2 of uniform cross-section consisting of two concentric segments of different radius joined by surfaces tangential to the segment of smaller radius.
