Abstract
844,071. Balancing engines. VYZKUMNY USTAV NAFTOVYCH MOTORU OKTAVEC K and ODSTRCIL B. Jan. 9, 1957 [Jan. 9, 1956], No. 877/57. Class 122 (3). In a piston engine having two auxiliary shafts whose axes 1, 2 are parallel with the axis O of the crankshaft but not in one plane with that axis and which shafts are driven by the crankshaft at the same speed thereof but in the opposite direction thereto, for the or each cylinder the primary forces due to the reciprocating masses are balanced by a first counterweight Vo on the crankshaft and a second counterweight U 1 on a first of the auxiliary shafts, each of the counterweights balancing one half of the reciprocating masses, and the unbalanced couple introduced by those counterweights in a plane transverse to the crankshaft axis is balanced by a couple produced by third and fourth equal counterweights Vm one on each auxiliary shaft and 180 degrees out of phase with each other. The counterweights U 1 and Vm on the shaft 1 are combined to form one counterweight V 1 . For a single cylinder engine, Fig. 2, the counterweights on the shafts may each be formed by two weights V 1 1, V 1<SP>11</SP>, V 2 1, V 2 11, Vk one on each side of the plane XY passing through the cylinder axis. Each counterweight Vk on the crankshaft balances one half of the rotating masses and one quarter of the reciprocating masses. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a single counterweight on one auxiliary shaft is disposed on one side only of the XY plane and the longitudinal tilting moment produced thereby is balanced by amending the counterweights on the other shaft accordingly. An arrangement is described for a single-cylinder engine having the axes of the auxiliary shafts 1, 2 lying in a plane at right angles to the cylinder and equidistant therefrom. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the invention is applied to a twocylinder engine in which the counterweights also balance the out-of-balance longitudinal moment caused by the reciprocating masses.
