Abstract

PURPOSE: To completely eliminate the primary and secondary inertial forces and inertial couple, by adopting special crankpin arrangement for an engine of four unusually arranged cylinders and providing only one balancer shaft which rotates at the same speed in the opposite direction as to the crankshaft of the engine.
CONSTITUTION: Crankpins are placed at 0° for a first cylinder, 90° for a second cylinder, 270° for a third cylinder and 180° for a fourth cylinder, respectively. A single balancer shaft 11, which rotates at the same speed in the opposite direction as to a crankshaft 10, is provided in parallel therewith. Two counterbalances (1)', (2)' for the first and the second cylinders or for the third and the fourth cylinders are provided on the balancer shaft 11. The weight, radius from the center of gravity and phase angle of the counterbalances (1)', (2)' are set at prescribed values to completely eliminate the primary and secondary inertial forces and inertial couple.
