Abstract

Three parallel rotating shafts are located in the cylinder head or in the sump of a straight four cylinder internal combustion engine. These are mechanically linked to rotate at twice the crankshaft speed and each has an associated counterweight. The out of balance shafts are parallel to each other. The plane of their axes is perpendicular to the axes of the pistons. The shafts are located on equal pitch centres, and two of the shafts are situated equally either side of the axis of the pistons.
