Abstract

722,783. Balancing reciprocating engines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 1, 1954 [Jan. 9, 1953], No. 715/53. Class 122 (3). In an internal combustion engine having at least two banks of cylinders set at an angle to one another and operating on a crank-shaft having all its throws in one plane the unbalanced secondary forces are balanced by a balance weight or set of balance weights rotating at twice crankshaft speed about an axis in the bisecting plane of the angle included by two adjacent banks and other balance weights or sets of balance weights rotating in the opposite sense to the aforesaid one at the same speed about axes arranged symmetrically to the first axis about the plane of symmetry of each bank. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement according to the invention for a V-eight cylinder engine in which a gear-wheel S on the crankshaft r engages a gear-wheel U of half its diameter on an auxiliary shaft B, C carrying a balance weight or set of balance weights and geared by means of gear-wheels T, J and W of equal size to auxiliary shafts A and D each carrying other balance weights or sets of balance weights, the axis of shaft B, C being in the plane bisecting the angle between the two banks of cylinders M and the axes of shafts A and D being arranged symmetrically to the axis of shafts B, C outside the planes through the centre lines of the cylinders of each bank.
