Abstract

Balancing moving parts by weights. - To minimize the torsional vibrations in the crank shaft of a multi-cylinder engine having more than four cylinders and to avoid resonance at critical speeds, the engine and the crank shaft are made symmetrical about a plane transverse to the axis of the engine shaft and the firing order is also symmetrical about this plane; or the engine may be constructed of parts similarly symmetrical about central planes. The engine may be divided in halves, each half being similarly symmetrical about a plane parallel to the first and passing through the second half; further subsymmetry may be arranged for these groups, a system of symmetrical arrangements about 3, 7, 15, 31 ... planes being thereby obtained. The cranks in each group may be at equal angles to each other; for a twelve-cylinder four-strokecycle engine as shown in Fig. 1 the angle between the cranks in each group is 120‹, but for a twostroke-cycle engine the angle is 60‹. The cylinders 1 and 12, 2 and 11, &c. fire together. Balance weights such as the flywheel h and electric generator rotor r are at the ends of the shaft. The angular displacement of the cranks for a fourstroke-cycle twenty cylinder engine is given; each group of ten on either side of the central plane is divided into two sets of five, each set having its cranks placed so as to produce a pentagen when viewed end on. The two pentagons so formed for each group are displaced with respect to each other. To assist in the prevention of resonance the natural frequency of vibration of the system may be either raised or lowered above the normal. As applied to an eight cylinder engine the frequency is lowered by making the central portion a, Fig. 4, of the crank shaft say four times longer than the other parts b. The frequency may be raised by concentrating the flywheel and balance weights near the central plane of the engine.
