Abstract

231,223. Rendell, E. de la R. Aug. 9, 1924. Balancing reciprocating parts of machinery, such as the pistons of internalcombustion engines. A connecting-rod 3 projects beyond the crank-pin 6 to carry a balance weight 8, the mass of which is to that of the reciprocating parts 1 as the length of the connecting-rod 3 is to that of its extension 9. Fourcylinder petrol engines having the usual co-planar crank arrangement and three - cylinder compound engines having the weight of the central low-pressure cylinder moving parts double that of the moving parts of each high-pressure cylinder are then in complete dynamical balance as regards translatory forces. Single-cylinder engines having a disc crank 10 and lead counterbalance 11 may be balanced by drilling holes 12. Piston thrust can be balanced by running two engines side by side in opposite directions. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 11340/05, [Class 7, Air and gas engines].
