Abstract

330,891. Solver, E. March 26, 1929. Connecting-rods.-In a twostroke internal - combustion engine, the gudgeon-pin 2, Figs. 1 and 2, is formed with a surface 5 concentric with its axis, and with semicylindrical surfaces 21 eccentric to its axis. The parts 5, 21 may be integral with the gudgeon-pin, or on a sleeve secured to the gudgeonpin. Rotation is prevented by engagement of the ends of the parts 21 with flats 8, 81 formed on the gudgeon-pin bosses. Alternatively, the surfaces 21 may be formed on the gudgeon-pin bosses. The connecting-rod small-end is formed with a corresponding concentric surface 14 and eccentric surfaces 24. During the up-stroke, the surfaces 5, 14 engage and the surfaces 21, 24 are separated, permitting access of lubricant, which is supplied by passages 12. During the down-stroke, the surfaces 21, 24 engage and the surfaces 5, 14 are separated. Preferably the surfaces which engage on the down-stroke are of greater area than those which engage on the up-stroke. In a modification, Fig. 6, the outer and upper surface of the small-end 29 is formed eccentric to the gudgeon-pin axis and, during the down-stroke, this surface engages a similar eccentric surface 28 formed in a bracket 26 secured in the piston, while separation takes place between the gudgeon-pin and the lower bore 31 of the small-end. During the up-stroke the connecting-rod swings to the left, as shown, and the gudgeon-pin engages the surface 31, while the outer surface of the connecting-rod is separated from the surface 28.
