Abstract

299,222. Martin, D. J. Dec. 16, 1927. Pistons.-The main piston 8 of an internal - combustion engine works inside an auxiliary piston 11 connected to an eccentric 14 or crank arm 90‹ behind the main crank 10. The areas of the piston surfaces are equal and the throws are arranged so that the compression space is maintained constant during the first part of the movement of the main piston past the inner and outer - dead centre. The piston surfaces need not be of the same area but any difference is compensated by a variation in the throws. If desired, the auxiliary piston may have a greater displacement than the main piston. The auxiliary piston is cooled by circulating fluid through the chamber 15 surrounding it; a strengthening spiral web 17<1> guides the piston in the cylinder. The piston is prevented from turning by key-ways and guides 18, 19.
