Abstract

The method of ensuring adequate lubrication of the cross-head of a reciprocating engine or similar machine utilises a special gudgeon pin. The gudgeon pin has end sections (a) which are eccentric to the central section (b). The central section (b) is attached rigidly to the piston rod so that the eccentricity (e) is at right angles to the piston axis. The bearing bushes in the connecting rod have bores sufficiently large that they fit over the section (a) and part of the section (b). As the connecting rod oscillates about the gudgeon pin the clearance (e) between bearing bush and pin in the zone of max. load varies so that oil is drawn in between the surfaces to provide adequate lubrication.
