Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the strength of the large end of a connecting rod, by integrally making the connecting rod of fiber-reinforced plastic and fitting the large end of the rod with a pair of cylindrical flanged bearing metals.
CONSTITUTION: A desired connecting rod 20 integrally provided with its small end 25 and large end 21 is made of FRP in which numerous fabriclike fibers having a plane shape as shown in the drawing are laminated together. A piston pin hole 26 is opened in the small end 25. A crankpin hole 24 is opened in the large end 21. A pair of cylindrical bearing metals 23a, 23b having flanges 22 are inserted into the pin hole 24 of the large end 21 from both of the ends of the hole 24 so that the bearing metals 23a, 23b are opposed to each other. A minute clearance is defined between the metals 23a, 23b to absorb thermal expansion. Lubricating oil supply grooves 30 are provided on the flanges 22. A metal 27 is fitted in the piston pin hole 26 as in conventional cases.
