Abstract

403,223. Balanced crankshafts. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(General Motors Research Corporation ; Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Dec. 14, 1932, No. 35504. [Class 122 (iii).] A balancing system for the crankshaft of a four-cylinder two-cycle engine or engine having a like unnatural balance consists in the provision of statically balanced counter-weights fixed on the crankshaft adjacent its ends for balancing the rotary force couples of all the cranks and statically balanced counter-weights movably supported by the frame of the engine adjacent the ends of the crankshaft and driven from the crankshaft at crankshaft speed for balancing the vertical primary inertia forces produced by the reciprocating parts. A four-throw crankshaft has the cranks 1 and 4 at opposite ends of the shaft in the same plane and the cranks 2 and 3 are at right angles thereto. Each end crank is provided with balance counter-weights 5, 6, asymmetrical to the crank webs and arranged to rock the shaft about a mutual point 7. The portions 6 neutralise the similar force couple produced by the cranks 2 and 3, whilst the portions 5 deal with the cranks 1 and 4. Secondary shafts 8, 9 driven by gearing from and at crankshaft speed are provided disposed parallel with the main crankshaft and at the ends thereof are counter-weights 10, 11 designed to produce vertical forces opposite and equal to that produced by the main reciprocating parts about the neutral point 7. In an alternative construction the auxiliary shafts are dispensed with and the whole of the apparatus mounted on the main shaft. To this effect the crankshaft carries eccentrics 21 adapted to move within a reciprocatable frame 20. In a further modification the eccentric is so shaped that it combines the function of the counterweights 5, 6 and eccentrics 21.
