Abstract
529,425. Valve gear ; magnetos &c. FIAT SOC. ANON. May 31, 1939, No. 16028. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1938. [Classes 7 (ii)] 7 (iv) and 7 (vi)] In a multi-cylinder engine of the V-type, particularly for aircraft, in which the propeller is driven through reducing-gear from a common crank shaft, the cam shaft of each cylinder row is driven from the propeller shaft through a secondary shaft also geared to the magneto, while the pumps and supercharger are driven from the crank-shaft. Fig. 1 indicates an engine with crank shaft 1 driving the propeller shaft 3 through gearing 2, two overhead cam shafts 8 being driven from the shaft 3 through bevel gearing 4, 4a, two intermediate shafts 5, bevel gearing 6, and spur gearing 7. Two magnetos 10 arranged within the engine contour are driven by gearing 9 from the shafts 5. The lubricating-pumps 11 are driven from the crank shaft, and two water pumps 14 by gearing 12, 13. The rotor 16 of the compressor, which is arranged at the centroid of the transverse section of the opposite end of the engine, is driven through gearing 17 and damping-means which serves further to reduce the torsional oscillation of the system.
