Abstract

561,429. Two-stroke engines power plant. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON, Aug. 27, 1942, No. 12070. Convention date, Sept. 5, 1941. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a two-stroke engine having in each cylinder opposed pistons 3, 4 driving crank-shafts 1, 2, the crank-shaft 1 at the exhaust end having a lead with respect to the crank-shaft 2 at the inlet end, a compressor 15 for combustion air is driven by the crank-shaft 1 and an exhaustdriven turbine 13 transmits power to the crankshaft 2. As shown, the crank-shafts 1, 2 drive a central shaft 8 through gearing 5, 6, 7 and the turbine 13 is connected to the gear 6 through gearing 19. The compressors 15 are reciprocating, their connecting-rods 16 having the bearings of their big ends mounted directly on the crankpin, or each connecting-rod being coupled to an eye on an engine connecting-rod. Instead of reciprocating, the compressor may be rotary, of the .centrifugal or axial-flow type, and a number of compressors may compress the air in stages.
