Abstract

877,557. Cooling systems for internalcombustion engines. VOITH, G.in.b.H., J. M., and KLOCKNER - HUMBOLDT - DEUTZ A. G. Sept. 15, 1959 [Sept. 19, 1958], No. 31375/59. Class 64(3) [Also in Group XXVII] In a supercharged engine having separate water cooling systems comprising circulating pumps and radiators for the engine and for the compressed air delivered by the supercharging blower, the compressed air cooler may be rendered inoperative and its associated radiator connected in series or parallel with the radiator of the engine cooling system. The engine cooling system comprises a pump 2 and radiators 4 through which air is forced by a fan 5 and the compressed air cooling system comprises a pump 15 which drives the cooling water through the cooler 10 and radiators 13<SP>1</SP>, 13", 13<SP>111</SP> in series to a header tank 14. In winter, when cooling of the compressed air from blower 9 is unnecessary, valve 17 is closed to disconnect the pump 15 from cooler 10, pipe 16b is opened to connect header 14 to the headers 6, and valve 18 is opened to connect the engine cooling system to the pipe 12a leading to the radiators 13<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>11</SP>, 13<SP>111</SP>, so that the latter radiators are arranged in parallel with radiators 4 in the engine cooling circuit whereby they are prevented from freezing. Partial closing of a cock 19 ensures flow through the branch 16a and a by-pass 20 permits pump 15 to continue running without building up back pressure. As an alternative the radiators 13' . . . 13<SP>11</SP> may be connected in series with radiators 4 in winter conditions. The radiator 13<SP>1</SP> is arranged close to the air intake filter 7 so that in winter the air entering the filter is heated, and the radiators 13<SP>11</SP>, 13<SP>111</SP>, may be built directly into the side of the vehicle.
