Abstract

1,033,175. Heating and ventilating vehicles; cooling systems for vehicle engines. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 4, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963], No. 35729/63. Headings F4U and F4V. Vehicle heating and ventilating apparatus comprises two fresh air flow passages communicating with the vehicle interior, one of the passages containing a heat exchanger fed with engine coolant and having a damper controlled opening leading to the exterior of the vehicle, the damper and further damper controlling air flow through the passages being arranged so that air flows through the heat exchanger at all times. As illustrated in Fig. 3a, the two passages 13 and 14 are fed with air by a fan and air flow from the passage 13 containing the heat exchanger 10 to the exterior of the vehicle is controlled by a flap 20 spring biased to a position shutting off the air flow. A flap 17 controls the proportions of air passing from passages 13 and 14 to a mixing chamber 22 and a flap 27 either shuts off flow to the vehicle interior, or allows flow to windscreen ducts 26 or allows flow to these ducts and through an opening 4 to the passenger space. The flaps 17 and 27 are operated by separate controls and are linked to strikers 38 and 39 which both, in the Fig. 3a position, hold the damper 20 open against its spring bias. Movement of both flaps away from their Fig. 3a positions allows the flap 20 to move towards its closed position. In another embodiment, Figs. 5-7, a flap 70 proportions hot air flow between the vehicle exterior and interior and a flap 71 controls air flow through the cold air passage 67. Air flows to the windscreen through openings 84 and air flow to the passenger space through openings 83 is controlled by a flap 72. Flap 72 is fixed to a link 101 (Fig. 7) connected to a cam follower 106 which is spring-biased against a cam member 98. Flap 70 is fixed to a link 92 connected to a link 94 pivoted at 95 which has a follower 97 engaging a cam track 96 in the member 98. The cam member is operated by a cable 90 between one extreme position in which flap 71 is closed and flap 70 directs hot air entirely to the vehicle exterior, and another extreme position in which flap 71 is closed and flap 70 prevents air flow to the exterior. The engine block 50 (Fig. 5) is connected to the air heating heat exchanger 51 via a valve 56 having a controlling wax capsule 57 which permits coolant to flow to a radiator 58 when the coolant. temperature exceeds 80 degrees. The fresh air fan 62 is energized by a manual switch 63 and by a switch 64 sensitive to coolant temperature which operates at 90 degrees to cause the fan 62 to run at greater speed than is attained by manual control.
