Abstract

1,135,933. Ventilating vehicles. SMITH'S INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 Aug., 1966 [7 Sept., 1965], No. 38137/65. Heading F4V. A motor vehicle engine cooling and passenger compartment heating apparatus comprises a radiator matrix 7 which carries the engine coolant liquid and is the only matrix provided to cool the engine coolant, and over which air is blown by an engine-driven fan 6, some air also by-passing the radiator through a passage 10. The air passing over the heat-exchanger 7 is divided into two streams by a movable wall 3, one stream entering a chamber 11 where it mixes with the by-passed air, and the other stream entering a chamber 8 which communicates with the atmosphere through ducts 14, 74 which are controlled by linked dampers 15, 16. The dampers 15, 16 are biased to a closed position and are held there by the pin 20 of a wax thermostat 19 which releases the dampers at a preselected engine coolant temperature. Chamber 8 also communicates with chamber 11 through an air pressure controlled valve 30 in wall 3. A valve 33 controls the flow of bypassed air into chamber 11 in conjunction with the position of the wall 3. In operation, all the air from fan 6 flows initially into chamber 11 via passage 10 or through valve 30, until the wax in thermostat 19 melts, when the dampers 15, 16 open. The temperature of the air flow into the compartment can then be adjusted by moving the wall 3 and valve 33, and the rate of air flow is kept constant by a valve 42 controlled by a blade spring 45 of non-linear force-displacement characteristic set by the shape of the member 46. The air flows from the valve 42 into distribution means (Fig. 2) which incorporates a demister outlet and a space heating outlet.
