Abstract

1,255,611. Ventilating vehicles. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 Dec., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 46769/67. Heading F4V. In a vehicle heating system the housing containing the heating and cooling apparatus and associated mechanism also contains a plenum chamber 5 in its upper portion that is immediately below the usual air inlet that also receives rain and snow, drain means is provided from the housing. Fresh or recirculated air passes first through the evaporator of a refrigerating system and then through a heater, or it may by-pass the heater, the conditioned air then being supplied to the windscreen, to the passenger compartment at face level, and to the passengers' feet as required. One or two centrifugal fans force the air through the system. Fresh air enters an inlet 7 and recirculated air enters at 8. Both streams pass through the evaporator 50 then either through a heat exchanger 10 supplied with hot engine coolant or through a by-pass port 12 and then enters one or more fans 18. Air from the fan issues at 24 to the windscreen, through adjustable vanes 27 to the passengers' faces and from outlet 20 to the passengers' feet. Flaps controlling the inlets and outlets are operated by vacuum actuators connected to a reservoir 43 which is in turn connected to the inlet manifold of the vehicle engine. A temperature control 38 and an air flow control 39 are provided. The flow of engine coolant through the heat exchanger 10 may be controlled by a variably settable thermostatic valve. In a modification, all the air passes through the heat exchanger 10, but if heating is not required, a water valve shuts off the supply of hot coolant to the exchanger 10.
