Abstract

1490336 Air conditioning vehicles DELANAIR Ltd 10 Oct 1974 [12 Oct 1973] 47877/73 Heading F4V [Also in Division G3] An air-condition unit for a vehicle incorporates a multiplicity of valves for controlling both the proportions of hot and cold air in a given flow path and the distribution of such flows. In particular, the air supplied to lower levels in the vehicle is required to be warmer than that supplied to upper levels. The valves are flaps whose position is varied to provide selected temperature and/or ventilation conditions under the control of electric circuitry (see Division G3) responsive to the temperature. Fans (not shown) blow air into ducts 3a over a refrigerator-cooler 2 and also over a heater 4 which may be part of the engine-cooling water system. Flaps 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 20 control the delivery of different proportions of cooled and heated air to different destinations in the vehicle either automatically in dependence on electric sensing of internal and external temperature orin certain circumstances, with the automatic control wholly or partly overriden-manually, e.g. to effect defrosting by directing the maximum heating effect at the windscreen. In particular, the flaps 6, 8, 10 and 12 provide an adjustable flow path which (in the case where 6 and/or 12 is fully open and 8 and 10 fully closed) can completely bypass the heater. Flap 14 controls the flow of heated and/or cooled air to the upper part of the vehicle either directly (with the flap open) or via trunking 16 and vents 18 and 22. Vents 18 direct air on to the vehicle windscreen and this flow is controlled by further valves 20. Similar arrangements provide flow to lower level outlets 24, 24a. Appropriate conjoint action of the various flaps in response to the output of the control system circuitry is effected by causing the circuitry to determine the angular position of a shaft 54, Fig. 4 (not shown) fitted with cams which are mechanically connected to the flaps.
