Abstract

815,240. Valves. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 8, 1956 [May 23, 1955], No. 14259/56. Class 135. A thermo-responsive valve, e.g. for an internalcombustion engine cooling system, comprises a frame 42, 52, 66 having an opening surrounded by a valve seat 46, a valve 38 for engaging the seat, a pin 34 fixed to the frame and extending through the opening and having a tapered end 60, a closed housing 80 enclosing the end, a deformable plug 88 of elastomeric material extending to one end of the housing, the other end 82 of the housing and the plug slidably receiving the pin and the housing abutting the valve 38 at 84 for movement therewith, a spring 40 between the frame and the valve 38 urging the latter towards its seat, a thermal material 94 in the housing around the plug and co-extensive with the plug at one end of the housing, expansion of the thermal material with temperature increase moving the valve 38 against the spring. Valve 38 carries an air vent valve open when the engine stops, but closing when the coolant flows.
