Abstract

663,907. Temperature-responsive actuating-elements. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Oct. 28, 1949, No. 27723/49. Class 64(ii) In a thermally responsive element, e.g. for controlling an automobile coolant valve. a housing a is provided at one end with a rigid closure and at the other end with a resilient sealing member c recessed externally to receive a force transmitting rod b which is displaced axially by distortion of the resilient member on thermal expansion of a charge of wax, e.g. Ceresine, filling the housing. As shown, the synthetic rubber member c has a flange d, clamped in position by a sleeve f secured by an end closure plate h, and squeezes out the rod b on expansion of the wax. The end plate h may be anchored to an adjustable support to set the element for the required operating temperature range. In a modification the clamping sleeve f is omitted, the flange d being bonded to the brass housing and clamped between an internal shoulder of the housing and a guide bush for the rod b. The bush is secured in the adjacent end of the housing which is formed with its opposite end closed.
