Class 64(2) In a thermally-responsive element the expansion of a material such as wax 2 in a closed chamber 1 is transmitted to an operating rod 3 through the medium of a resilient member 4, a metal sleeve 6 being arranged in an adjustable manner between the rod and the member 4 to displace the latter in such a way as to vary the capacity of the chamber 1. The wax is inserted as a preformed pellet and the sleeve 6 adjusted so that the chamber is completely filled to eliminate variation in starting temperature between elements of slightly different dimensions. The sleeve 6 is threaded into a collar 5 engaging a flange on the member 4 which may be of synthetic rubber. In a second embodiment, a second collar slidably mounted on the rod 3 and connected by a pair of screws to the collar 5 bears on the sleeve 6 and serves to adjust the latter.
