Abstract

881,132. Thermally-actuated valves. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Oct. 21, 1959, No. 35705/59. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] A thermally actuated valve comprises a fluid passage having a wall 20 therein defining a first port 56, an abutment member 16 within the passage, a thermostatic power element 30 positioned between the wall and abutment member for expansive movement on fluid temperature increase to substantially close the first port, and a second port 28 formed in the wall to allow a small quantity of fluid to flow through the passage closely adjacent the power element upon closure of the first port whereby, when the fluid temperature has sufficiently decreased, the fluid flowing through the second port is effective to cool the power element and cause said power element to retract away from the first port. The port 56 is formed in a grommet 24 of nylon or other plastic material, the seating surface being formed with a notch defining the second port 28; two notches as shown may be provided. The thermostatic element comprises a pellet 44 of wax or other expansible material compounded, if desired, with copper or aluminium particles, located in a cage 32 secured to a sleeve 34 by a ring 36, the pellet being in contact with a rubber diaphragm 50 acting upon a deformable plug 52. In operation, when fluid passing through the valve exceeds a certain temperature, the wax expands causing the plug 52 to act on a piston 51 secured to the abutment spring 16, the element then rising up the piston until the flat surface of the cage 32 substantially closes off the port 56. Due to the notches 28 a small quantity of fluid passes over the cage, and when the fluid temperature decreases, causes the wax to contract and thereby re-open the valve.
