Abstract
1,227,114. Temperature responsive actuating elements. INTERNATIONAL CONTROLS CORP. Feb.4, 1969 [Aug.19, 1968], No.5869/69. Heading G1D. [Also in Division F2] A thermal motor, which is suitable for use in operating a valve, comprises a cylindrical chamber 12, a piston 14 composed of two piston portions 16 and 18, which piston portions define therebetween a shoulder 20 and extend through the cylinder end walls, and a heating element 22 which is designed to activate a thermally responsive material, such as wax, contained within the chamber. With the above arrangement, and upon heating of the material, the resultant expansion acts on the shoulder 20 and so tends to displace the piston and cylindrical chamber relative to one another. When contained in a valve, Figs. 2 to 5, (not shown), wherein the flow passages may be aligned or at right angles to each other, either one of the portions of piston 14 is anchored to the valve body and the cylinder carries the valve member, with the cylinder being subjected to the bias of a spring acting in a direction tending to close the valve.
