Abstract
975,893. Valves. HUMBER Ltd., and P. M. T. COBLEY. Aug. 28, 1961 [Aug. 30, 1960], No. 29912/60. Heading F2V. A thermally actuated valve, for engine cooling systems, comprises a seat member 10, Fig. 3, having a central aperture 11 formed by a skirt 12 whose edge 13 forms the valve seat, and a movable valve closure member 14 having a skirt 26 and a rim 16 which seats on the edge 13. A small radial clearance, such as 0.015 inch. is provided between the two skirts 12, 26 so that during the opening of the valve there is a restricted flow path provided by the skirts. These portions may be tapered to provide restricted passages which increases with opening of the valve. The valve closure 14 is loaded by a spring 24 and connected to a movable cylinder 22 housing a fixed piston and filled with wax or fluid which expands with heat to open the valve. As shown in Fig. 5, a second valve member 31 may be loosely mounted on the cylinder 22 to control a bypass which is closed by the piston during the early part of the opening of valve 14.
