428,570. Cooling cylinders. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., Cranford Lane, Hayes, Middlesex, and LYON, G., Ranmoor, Fulmer Road, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. July 31, 1934, No. 22320. [Class 7 (ii)] [See also Group XIII] In a cooling system for an aircraft engine in which cooling liquid is circulated through a radiator 6 and, during overload, vapour, separated in a separator 4, is condensed in a condenser 11 located above the radiator, the hydraulic resistances are such that the drain pipe 13, by which the condensate returns to the radiator, always has a head of liquid standing therein, and air is thus prevented from entering the system. If the separator 4 is not large enough to take all the liquid when heated, the condenser is divided into two parts by a partition 19, a connecting steam pipe 20 acting as a water lock. A gravity-actuated valve on the end of this pipe, or on the end of the connecting pipe 9, closes during inverted flying, an inverted vent pipe 12 still being available to vent the system. An auxiliary drain pipe 22 is also arranged to have a head of liquid standing therein. The drain pipes 13, 22 may be connected to the throats of Venturi tubes in a byepass between the inlet and outlet pipes of the radiator, and the inlet pipe thereof, respectively.
