[Class 23] [Also in Groups XIII and III] A vapour separator a for the cooling water system of an internal-combustion engine is formed with an annular header h, Fig. 2, having inlets b communicating with the cylinder jacket e, nozzles i through which the mixed water and vapour are directed with a gyratory motion into the body of the separator, a vapour outlet.i, and a water outlet c covered by a cone having outlet apertures o and radial baffles p for reducing the gyratory motion of the water. The water from the cylinder jacket, the pressure in which is maintained at a gauge pressure of from 5 to 15 pounds per sq. in., passes through the pipe d to the separator from which the water is returned to the jacket by a pump #, while the vapour evolved owing to the fall in pressure of the water as it enters the annular header passes off through the outlet j either to a radiator or a condenser k. The condensate is returned to the bottom of the separator.
