Abstract

1364456 Steam generators C. H MAY 15 Nov 1971 [4 Dec 1970] 57809/70 Heading F4A [Also in Division F1] A vapour generator, particularly for forming steam for a prime mover, comprises a reservoir 4 containing liquid such as water to be vaporized, having an inlet 3 for exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine 1 leading to a perforated screen 7 from which the hot gases bubble through the water. Steam and residue gases collect above the water and are discharged through a pipe 15 extending into a shield 20 with drain holes 21. The pipe 15 may be connected to further water separating drums (24, 34, Fig. 4, not shown) arranged in series. Baffle plates 12 divide the reservoir into components. The I.C. engine 1 is described as a free piston engine with opposed cylinders 36, each cylinder exhausting into a separate reservoir, Fig. 4 (not shown), through a release valve 38 carrying a spark plug 40 and loaded by four leaf springs 41. The opposed faces 80, 81 of the valve and its seat are tipped with "Stellite" (Registered Trade Mark). Cooling water is supplied from the reservoir 4 through pipe 45 to annular chambers 53, 60 in the cylinder head 51, and this coolant passes through a lip seal 65 of a resilient diaphragm 62 into an inner annular chamber 63 which receives the exhaust gases. Alternatively the pipe 45 may be supplied with coolant from a separate source. The generator may be used on a vehicle.
