Abstract
478,935. Cooling cylinders. MERCIER, P. E. May 25, 1937, Nos. 14544 and 14545. Convention dates, Dec. 23, 1936 and Feb. 5, 1937. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Cooling air is directed through a divergent opening 1 into an annular conduit leading to the engine cylinders and other surfaces to be cooled, e.g. a radiator, whence it returns by an annular conduit 7 to a convergent exit 12. The entrance and exit ports may be controlled by flaps 13, 14, which are connected by an adjustable link 19, and operated by a deformable chamber 18 supplied by a pressure fluid against spring pressure. The air is guided by baffles 8, 9 and a shot-proof plate 11, and the exhaust _ manifolds 20 are placed behind a screen 21. The inlet is preferably behind the plane 2 of rotation of the propeller, but it may be formed as a rotatable fairing for the roots of the propeller. The part of the cowling round the engine may be detachable. The flaps may be independently adjustable or replaced by other means for varying the port area, e.g. on axially slidable cowling, or an inflatable annular chamber. If the pitch of the propeller is variable, the inlet port area may be varied simultaneously with such variation.
