Abstract
505,702. Cooling cylinders; aircraft engine-cowling. MERCIER, P. E. Feb. 18, 1938, No. 5201. Addition to 478,935. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In the engine cowling described in the parent Specification in which cooling air passes through an annular divergent passage 8 and returns to leave the cowling by a convergent outlet 9, an exhaust pipe 57 is arranged in front of, and may constitute a wall of, this outlet. A member 61 is adjustable, preferably by inflation of a pneumatic tube 65, to vary the area of the outlet 9. Further air may be drawn through a casing 58 round the exhaust pipe, and through a space between the air-screw hub cap 50 and a fairing 54 as shown by the arrow 73. This latter air passes up fairings 70 and joins the air which has cooled the front of the cylinders as described in Specification 489,076. An annular blade-like member may be arranged in the inlet aperture adjustable in conjunction with the member 61 as described in Specification 489,594. In a modification, individual exhaust pipes may be flattened and bent back to form a continuous annular slot located in the air outlet: The annular partition, between the inlet and the outlet for the cooling air, may have projections extending between the exhaust pipes to direct cooling air on to the upper parts of the cylinders and through conduits to the interiors of the cylinder heads.
