Abstract

715,323. Jet propulsion plant. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. April 16, 1951 [Oct. 7, 1950], No. 8839/51. Class 110(3) A jet propulsion unit comprises a ram jet duct having in succession a frontal air intake of diverging form, an intermediate portion of greater cross section and a rearwardly directed propulsion nozzle and a pulse-jet unit substantially entirely enclosed by air flow in the ram jet duct having inlet adjacent or near to the intermediate portion of the ram jet chest and its combustion chamber at least partly inside the intermediate portion. A pulse-jet unit is defined as a pulsatory combustion chamber and a nozzle which ejects the gases intermittently. In the arrangement shown Figs. 1 and 2, four pulse jet units p<SP>1</SP>, p<SP>2</SP>, p<SP>3</SP> and p<SP>4</SP> are arranged in the casing, 1 forming a ram jet unit. Air entering the casing 1 at 2 is slowed down in a diffuser 5 and then divided. Part of the air enters the inlets 4 of the pulse jets and part flows over the pulse jets to the propulsion nozzle 3. The air passing through the inlets 4, which are provided with aerodynamic valves, enters pulsatory combustion chambers 6 which exhaust through tubes 7. The tubes 7 are surrounded by nozzle 8 which allow part of the air which has passed over the pulse jets to mix with the combustion gases from these jets. An aerodynamic valve is a valve which has a greater resistance flow in one direction than in another. These valves allow a certain amount of the combustion gases to flow back through the inlets 4 and to avoid the loss of these gases a bent tube 13 is provided to lead them in the same direction as the flow through the ram jet. The combustion chambers of the pulse jet units may be provided with fins 11 so as to assist in the transfer of heat to the air passing over the units. Some of these fins may be extended as at 12 to enable the pulse jet units to be supported relative to one another and to the casing 1. In a modification, the pulse-jet units are arranged in line and are surrounded by a ram jet of elongated form. This unit is stated to be suitable for installation in an aircraft wing with its inlet situated near the leading edge and its outlet near the trailing edge of the wing. It is also stated that supplementary fuel may be burnt in the ram jet unit. The outlets 10 of the pulse-jet units may be arranged, as shown after the outlet 3 of the ram jet or may terminate a little before the outlet 3. Additional fuel may be burnt in the airflow through the ram jet duct. Specifications 653,629 and 711,281 are referred to.
