772,473. Refrigerating. GODFREY (HANWORTH), Ltd., [formerly GODFREY & PARTNERS (HOLDINGS), Ltd., Sir G.] Nov. 25, 1952 [Aug. 25, 1951], No. 20065/51. Class 29 A self-contained air expansion refrigerating apparatus of the kind described in Specification 771,736 [Group III], for cooling the cabins of aircraft while on the ground is mounted on a vehicle and comprises a prime mover, e.g. an internal combustion engine 13, driving an air compressor 15 from which the air passes through an intercooler 20 to an air expander 17, detachable connections 41, 42 being provided for flexible hose 23 delivering the air to the cabin &c. An internal combustion engine 13 mounted on a truck drives through gearing 14 the centrifugal compressor 15 by a shaft 16 which also carries an inward flow expansion turbine 17, air delivered by the compressor passing through a duct 19 and intercooler 20 to the turbine where it expands and is delivered as cold air to the flexible hose pipe 23 connected to the cabin. Ambient air is forced through the cooler 20 by a fan 27 driven through a clutch 40 by a turbine 25 driven by the exhaust gases from the engine 13. Air is drawn by a fan 29 through the radiator 28 of the engine 13 or enters through an inlet valve 31 and passes through a filter 32 and silencer 33 to the compressor 15 and thence through a silencer 34 and the cooler 20 to the turbine. From the compressor a connection 35 with a two-way valve 36 and a restrictor valve 37 enables hot air to be supplied to the cabin. A further branch pipe 38 from the outlet of the cooler 20 enables pressure air at modest temperature to be supplied for testing pressurized cabins. Hinged caps 41, 42, 43 blank off the ducts not required. When hot air is being supplied the clutch 40 is opened to disconnect the fan 27.
