Abstract

689,844. Air cooling-installations; refrigerating. WADE ENGINEERING, Ltd. May 18, 1951 [May 24, 1950], No. 13066/50. Class 29 and 64 (iii) [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIII] A system for supplying compressed air to a cabin of an aircraft powered by one or more internal combustion gas turbine engines of the kind in which compressed air is supplied to the cabin from an engine compressor through a free-running turbo-expander has a rotary expansion engine of the positive displacement type interposed between the compressor and the free-running turbo-expander and coupled to a power absorbing device so that heat from the gas is converted to power during its passage through the expansion engine. The main engine compressor 2 draws in air through the intake 1 and supplies it through ducting 3 to the turbine 4. A branch pipe 6 from the ducting 3 conveys air. under pressure to the cabin 12 through a free-running turbo expander of known type comprising a compressor 9 and turbine 11 coupled together so that gases compressed in the compressor 9 and passing through a heat exchanger 10 enter the turbine 11 which drives the compressor 9, the pressure and temperature of the air entering the cabin being thereby reduced. In order to ensure a further reduction without loss of power a rotary piston displacement motor 7, preferably of the type described in Specification 663, 818, [Group XXVI], is interposed between the ducting 3 and the free-running turbo-expander, the motor driving a dynamo 8 or other auxiliary equipment such as an air compressor.
